Mother's Day is a holiday in honor of mother and motherhood and is established in the Western world since 20th Century. In many countries it is on the second Sunday in May.
As the founder of today's Mother's Day is the Methodist Anna Marie Jarvis. The following year (at her insistence in turn), was dedicated on the second Sunday of May in the Methodist Church in Grafton all mothers a prayer service. She devoted herself full time now in order to create an official Mother's Day, and launched an initiative for the introduction of an official holiday in honor of mothers, by writing letters to politicians, businessmen, clergymen and women's associations. The movement grew rapidly. In 1909 the Mother's Day was celebrated.in 45 states in the United States. 1912 introduced the Methodists in West Virginia, the commemoration.
On 8 May 1914, the U.S. Congress adopted the Joint Resolution Designating the Second Sunday in May as Mother's Day: As a token of love and devotion to the mothers the 2nd Sunday in May is celebrated as Mother's Day. The President of the United States should be allowed to hoist the flags on the public buildings on that day. Thus, the Mother's Day was first celebrated as national holiday in 1914.
